It can also be used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), which is an high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs.
The therapeutic potential of sildenafil is limited by its safety and efficacy in men, which may cause side effects in women and children. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in a large cohort of healthy women. A prospective study was conducted in this multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in the United States (USA). The study population was healthy women between 18 and 55 years of age (mean age of 63.8 ± 10.6 years). The study population consisted of 4,882 healthy subjects (male-only population). The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) participants with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2; (2) diagnosed as having a pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) by conventional cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension and heart failure (HFrEF); (3) with a history of heart failure before the enrollment of the study; (4) who were excluded because of the presence of contraindications, including those mentioned in the relevant sections, as contraindications to the use of sildenafil in this study.
